Another personal milestone... of Doom?
Tomorrow I begin posting the first page of the second book, as yet untitled, and this brings about a new page in my life. Every page I draw is a page farther than I have ever done. The first book took over two years to draw, mostly because I am a stay-at-home mom and there was some delay with a difficult pregnancy and bouncing back from the birth of our daughter halfway thru the book. I did get the first half done and there was talk of going to APEcon with only the first half. But, I felt that I needed to finish it, so we pushed back to the following years APE. Dream come true.... but also a personal fight. I have a few demons that have plagued me for as long as I can remember, Self-doubt, Fear, Failure, and Regret. The tag team of my mental doom.....
They creep in constantly and the battle rages on daily. Most people see me doing this book and say, "You did it! You are fulfilling your dream! If it goes anywhere or not, you tried!" The problem with my brain is, it doesn't see it that way. My brain says, "HA! I told you not to do it! I told you it would fail! You should just never even try!" That being said, I am still here, still drawing, still writing, because with every Facebook "Like", with every view the webpage gets, with every new compliment, I get a little stronger and keep going. I originally said to my husband on our way to APE, that I would give it one year, until October 2012, and if it wasn't going anywhere, I would pull the plug. It takes years for any business to start making money, and yes, I do hope to make money, and I need to give it time. I am not looking to get rich or famous, but just to make a living. Due to limited funding, I cannot afford to advertise, so I rely on word of mouth to spread my work across cyberspace. I have debated on sending to publishers and still do, I am looking into creator owned types, and there aren't many, but then I would lose my babies as most publishers absorb your rights. Do I sacrifice my first born?
So, to cut to the chase, I appreciate all of you and I just wanted you to know that you all keep me going, especially thru the times when I just want to give up. Thank you for reading Thorny Grove and thank you for giving it a chance! I hope you all enjoy the next story as much as the first!
